ZHONG KUI is a legendary Chinese figure from around 1300 years ago. His story is that of an intelligent and skilled man who sought to serve the emperor, so he took a nationwide test and scored at the top. But because of his hideous appearance the court denied him his rightful position.
Distraught, Zhong Kui beat his head against the gates of the palace until he killed himself.
On his way to the underworld he refused to drink the elixir which would wipe his memory and connection to the material world, thereby giving him a unique power to be able to transit between the material and spiritual worlds without effort.
Our story takes place in the modern world where Zhong Kui lives, protecting humans from the occasional transgression of demons trying to enter our world. We humans see Zhong Kui and the demons as other humans but in fact they are not. And creatures of the underworld can see each other for what they truly are.
